Fun Fact: The race’s iconic tower logo is modeled after the monument in the park that overlooks the mighty Mississippi where Julien Dubuque’s grave is located. Julien Dubuque is credited as the first European to settle on what is now Iowa soil in 1788. He received a land grant from the governor of Spain to work the land for lead and he eventually married Potosa, the daughter of the local Mesquakie Indian Chief Peosta.
