Fun Fact: Big Bear Lake was named after the grizzly bear, which was the first “Big Bear” to live in these mountains. The gold rush in the late 1800s in Southern California plays a big role in the disappearance of the grizzly bear from the San Bernadino Mountains (last seen in 1906). Black bears still live locally.
