Fun Fact: Started in 1937, construction on Huntsville State Park began with a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) group, a program started by President Roosevelt during the Great Depression. Horrible rain, 12 inches over 2 days, destroy the park in 1940 and left it in ruins for almost a decade.  In the early 1950’s, the Texas Forest Service supervised the cutting and sale of lumber in the area. The money was used to not only build the dam, but finish the park. In May 1956, the 2,083 acre park opened to the public.
